When you get engaged it seems like everyone wants to pitch in. Let us tell you why we think it is so important to hire professionals for your wedding day.
We started our business after almost a full summer of “helping out friends”. People knew that Chelsea was in the wedding industry. They would come to her for advice and ask her to just help out a bit on the wedding day. She did it for a while because she hoped it would help her gain experience, in some ways it did but in some ways, she just felt like someone that was just winging it and hoping for the best. Luckily, she was “just the friend helping out” so if something went wrong it couldn’t really come down on her.
We have had this conversation a million times and it always comes back to the fact of your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. Paying for a professional is so worth it. If you aren’t convinced here are a few reasons why you should always hire a professional over a friend who just wants to help you out or gain experience.
Defining a clear role can be tricky
When we have a bride tell us that they have a friend photographing their wedding or doing the flowers, etc., it is typically tricky from the get-go. If it is not a professional, they may have a full-time job that they are tending to so responding to our questions about the wedding day are not a priority. When your friend is doing you a favor they always mean well but they do not understand all of the details that go into a wedding day and how big of a commitment it is. This seriously slows down our process and makes it tricky for us to get all of the details in order. A professional is committed to you and the process of planning your wedding day.
Leave your wedding day to the professional
Since we have been in business for six years we have awesome processes in place and all of the vendors we work with do as well! We know how to problem solve on the fly. We have seen and put out so many “fires” on a wedding day. You won’t get that with a friend. If you are getting behind schedule because your photographer friend took 2 hours to photograph family photos. Or if your friend the “florist for the day” doesn’t know that flowers will most likely die when sharing a fridge with fruits and veggies you could be out A LOT of money.
The great thing about hiring professionals is we guarantee our jobs. We have a contract that states that we will fulfill certain duties leading up to and on your wedding day. If a florist kills all of your flowers before the wedding day, because she made a mistake while storing them, then that would be her responsibility to make it right.
You would like to keep your friends, right?
So say that said “florist for the day friend” kills all of your flowers. What does that do to your friendship? You are already a stressed out bride and then you get the call the day before your wedding and she is going to need more money to go buy you more flowers. Ugh, that would be the worst! What if your Uncle Bob photographs your wedding and loses his sim card sometime between shooting your wedding and when he got home? I am telling you, this is a lot of pressure to put on a friend. You love each other and both want the best for your wedding, therefore your friends and family should enjoy it with you, not work on the day.
If after all of this, you are still considering having your friend help out on your wedding day. Please consider the following:
- Pay them. Maybe it is a lot less than what a professional will charge but pay them something. This makes this seem less like a favor and more of a contracted commitment for your friend.
- Be sure to know their talents and that you truly have faith that they will be able to complete the task you are asking them to do. Also, think about how much this task means to you. If it does not come out exactly how you want, will you be crushed? If the answer is yes, then you NEED to hire a professional.
Your wedding day is the most important day of your life! You are making an incredible commitment to spend your life with someone. You are doing this with your closest friends and family. Create a budget for yourself and figure out how you can create a day that you will be forever excited about.
